About Dancefloor

Dancefloor is a small solo puzzle game by Anthony Broussard (quantumpotato on BoardGameGeek). You are the bouncer of a club with room for exactly nine fans on a 3x3 dancefloor. Every card is a fan with a genre and a fame number, and each genre has its own idea of who it will make room for: jazz fans always step off, pop fans only for someone more famous, metalheads only for a bigger metalhead or a techno fan, techno fans only for someone of equal fame.

It placed second in the Best Abstract Game category and 17th overall at the 2022 BGG Solitaire Print and Play Contest. The hook is the career score: fans you set aside go into a Hall of Fame, their fame adds up across games, and the abilities on their backs can be spent in later sessions. One lost game resets everything.

How to play in one minute

  1. Shuffle the fan deck and deal a 3x3 grid, redrawing if two techno fans would share a row or column.
  2. Each turn draw the top fan and slide them onto the end of a row or column, pushing the fan at the far end off, if that fan’s genre allows it.
  3. Line up three fans of equal fame for a Highlight: discard two, set one aside for scoring and refill the gaps. Stars are wild and always take the centre.
  4. Draw the last card of the deck and you win: add the fame of every fan set aside to your career score and keep their ability cards.
  5. If a drawn fan has no legal line to slide into, the dancefloor grinds to a halt and your career score resets to zero.
